Lifx smart lights are light bulbs that you can connect to your smart home. They’re multi-colored and wi-fi enabled, so that they can be controlled by your smart phone. Think of them as a direct competitor with Philips Hue and Belkin WeMo lights.
The Lifx are essentially “plug & play”. You can just screw them into your lamp or light fixtures and they’ll switch on. At that point, to leverage the smarts, you’ll need to use the Lifx smart phone app which is available on either android or iOS. From the on, the pairing is simple and you have full control over your lights.
The interface allows you to change the colours and brightness of your lights, but frankly not a huge amount more than that. There are a few gimmicky effects like a strobe or a mode that makes your Lifx flicker like a candle.. as well as “scenes” where you can save some preset preferences once you have created the mood that you desire.
There have been some valid complaints that there are no real scheduling or triggering options included in the Lifx app. However, with the Lifx smart lights now part of the “works with nest” protocol, you can automate your lights through the Nest platform. Additionally, Lifx has just announced that its opening up its hardware to IFTTT controls (if this then that), presenting another platform that you can use to create some smarts around your lights. This is especially useful if you don’t want to fork out for nest thermostat, or if you want to remain agnostic from the Google platform.
Overall Lifx presents as compelling a proposition as the other smart lights out there. There is enough there to satisfy the home automation installer beginner who may want to plug in and go; but also plenty of features to be leveraged via Nest or IFTT for the advanced Smart Home owner who wants a little more punch from their products.
